The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, Theresa Ushie, for a period of three months, following a petition by members of the Bekwarra Legislative Council alleging abuse of office and misappropriation of funds.
In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Matthew Okache, stated that the lawmakers passed this resolution during plenary on Tuesday in Calabar, stating that the suspension was carried out in accordance with Section 14(3) of the Cross River State Local Government Law.
It further stated that the Vice Chairman of Bekwarra LG, Egbung Odama, was directed to immediately assume office as Acting Chairman for the duration of the suspension, emphasising that his mandate includes ensuring stability and effective running of the council.
